Researchers have proposed that the structure at Indonesia's Gunung Padang, believed to be a pyramid, could be as old as 25,000 years—significantly predating Egypt’s Djoser Step Pyramid, which dates to around 2,630 BC.

Their study suggests that the pyramid began as a natural lava formation, later shaped and layered by humans using sophisticated stonework, implying the presence of advanced construction abilities long before the advent of agriculture.

Skepticism remains among archaeologists, with some arguing that the deeper layers lack definitive evidence of human modification, such as charcoal traces or tool marks commonly associated with ancient human activity.

In response to the controversy, the lead researcher has encouraged international scholars to examine the site firsthand, while the scientific journal that published the study has stated it is conducting a further review of the findings.
