Malaysia has completed its first Nvidia-powered artificial intelligence data centre in Kulai, Johor, marking a significant milestone revealed during a meeting between Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang, and YTL Power managing director Yeoh Seok Hong on the sidelines of the APEC Leaders' Economic Summit.

The facility, located within the 600-megawatt YTL Green Data Centre Park, utilizes Nvidia's latest NVL72 Grace Blackwell (GB200) GPUs to power Malaysia's first large language model called Ilmu, next-generation digital applications, and the YTL AI Cloud, positioning the country among the first in the region to benefit from advanced AI capabilities according to Yeoh Seok Hong.

Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz announced that the hyperscale data centre will be powered primarily by 500 megawatts of on-site solar energy, making it one of the world's most advanced AI supercomputing facilities running predominantly on renewable energy while reinforcing Malaysia's commitment to sustainable technology and innovation.

The Malaysian government has earmarked 5.9 billion ringgit in the 2026 budget to strengthen the AI sector and position Malaysia as a regional hub for data centre and AI innovation, with Tengku Zafrul emphasizing the government's continued promotion of strategic investments in AI infrastructure to drive digital transformation.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim congratulated YTL and Nvidia on this achievement, expressing hope that it will accelerate Malaysia's AI drive for all citizens while discussions covered progress in implementing the AI agenda, including the establishment of the National AI Office and the strategic goal of becoming an AI-driven nation by 2030.
