Kuala Lumpur International Airport has been crowned Asia Pacific's most connected airport and ranked joint fourth globally in OAG's Megahubs 2025 report released in September, while simultaneously holding the prestigious title as the world's leading low-cost carrier megahub, surpassing major regional competitors including Singapore, Tokyo, and Seoul.
The Malaysian aviation gateway has expanded its reach by 22% over the past decade, now offering travelers access to an extensive network driven primarily by AirAsia, which operates 36% of all flights at KLIA and contributes significantly to the airport's dominance in budget travel connectivity across Asia and beyond.
OAG Head of ASPAC Mayur Patel emphasized that Kuala Lumpur's dual success as both a top global hub and the world's premier low-cost megahub demonstrates the Asia Pacific region's unique capability to serve passengers across all travel segments, from premium full-service carriers to affordable budget airlines.
The Asia Pacific region claims three positions in the global top 10 most connected airports, with Seoul Incheon ranking sixth and Tokyo Haneda placing ninth, though Haneda dropped from its previous third-place position, while Singapore Changi and Bangkok Suvarnabhumi round out the regional top five internationally connected airports.
Asia Pacific's aviation strength extends to low-cost carrier operations, with 16 of the world's top 25 budget airline hubs located in the region, including Seoul Incheon in second place, Manila in third, and Hong Kong surging 20 positions to fourth place, powered by Cathay Pacific's HK Express subsidiary.
