PETRONAS and Microsoft signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding on July 31, 2025, during Energy Asia 2025, expanding their collaboration across innovation and sustainability to support Malaysia's development of an AI-enabled economy and ecosystem while advancing energy transition efforts in Asia.
The partnership will leverage Microsoft's new cloud region in Malaysia alongside technologies including Agentic AI, Microsoft Copilot, data analytics, cloud computing, and cybersecurity to unlock operational efficiency and sustainability performance across PETRONAS' value chain.
This collaboration aligns with Malaysia's national aspiration to become an AI-enabled economy, combining Microsoft's technology expertise with PETRONAS' strengths in energy innovation to accelerate digital transformation and operational sustainability in the energy sector.
The initiative builds on Microsoft's broader commitment to provide AI skilling opportunities for 2.5 million people across ASEAN member states by 2025, including the AI for Malaysia's Future program targeting 800,000 Malaysians with AI-related skills by end-2025.
Both companies will focus on fostering an ecosystem that enables Malaysian organizations to harness AI's potential for economic advancement and societal benefit, supporting Malaysia's efforts to build regional leadership in AI capabilities while advancing sustainable energy solutions.
