A growing number of Singapore drivers are reconsidering their shift to electric vehicles, with 32% now planning to purchase traditional gasoline cars in the next two years—up from 26% in 2024, according to EY's 2025 Mobility Consumer Index released on January 9.

The survey of 300 local car buyers revealed that concerns over inadequate charging infrastructure and high battery replacement costs are outweighing initial enthusiasm for green mobility.

This trend reflects a global pattern, though Singapore's preference for internal combustion engine vehicles remains lower than the worldwide average of 50%, which increased from 37% in 2024.

Despite Singapore's position as a leading market for EV adoption in Southeast Asia, the EY research shows consumer confidence in electric vehicles is still fragile due to practical challenges.

Experts note that while consumer sentiment is shifting, actual 2025 sales data will likely continue to show strong EV registration numbers as the country works toward its 2040 electrification goals.
