Singapore has maintained its position as Asia's most peaceful nation while climbing to fifth place globally in the 2024 Global Peace Index, according to the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP).
The city-state joins the world's top five most peaceful countries alongside Iceland (1st), Ireland (2nd), Austria (3rd), and New Zealand (4th), marking its entry into this elite group for the first time.
Singapore excelled particularly in the Safety and Security and Ongoing Conflict domains, ranking first in both categories, despite being among the top 20 nations with highest military expenditure at USD 3,535.43 per capita.
The Institute for Economics and Peace highlighted Singapore's exceptional performance in safety and security metrics, reinforcing the nation's reputation as a stable and secure environment.
While the Asia Pacific region saw a marginal 0.1% decline in its overall peacefulness score, it retained its position as the second most peaceful region globally, with Singapore leading the regional rankings.
