Thailand's cabinet has officially approved a $1.23 billion bid to host Formula 1 street racing in Bangkok starting as early as 2028, with Tourism Minister Sorawong Thienthong confirming the substantial investment value for the ambitious motorsport venture.

Government spokesperson Jirayu Houngsub announced that the initial proposal covers hosting five Formula 1 events between 2028 and 2032, marking Thailand's entry into world-class motorsport competition that officials previously considered unlikely for the country.

The proposed Bangkok circuit will be a 3.54-mile street track strategically located between Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal Station and Chatuchak Park in the northern area of Bangkok's city center, creating a unique urban racing experience.

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra personally attended the Monaco Grand Prix last month as part of ongoing discussions with Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali about securing Thailand's place on the international racing calendar.

Thailand's 2028 entry timing aligns with several existing Formula 1 contracts expiring, including the Dutch Grand Prix ending after 2026 and the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps becoming biennial from 2027, creating potential calendar openings for new venues.
