Malaysian pharmacist Syah (@syahfarmasi) has warned women about excessive matcha consumption potentially disrupting menstrual cycles due to matcha's high caffeine content of approximately 70 milligrams per cup, significantly higher than regular tea.

The TikTok health educator explained that excessive caffeine intake can interfere with the body's production of progesterone and estrogen hormones, potentially leading to irregular periods, increased menstrual pain, mood swings, and general menstrual instability.

Syah recommends that women experiencing irregular periods should try stopping matcha consumption for 1-2 weeks to observe any changes in their cycle, noting that matcha is also found in various desserts like cakes and tarts which may increase daily caffeine intake unknowingly.

While the pharmacist's warning focuses on overconsumption risks, other health sources suggest moderate matcha intake may actually help during menstruation through its anti-inflammatory properties that could alleviate bloating and period pain, plus L-theanine for calming effects.

The contrasting perspectives highlight the importance of moderation, with warnings about overindulging versus potential benefits of controlled consumption, emphasizing that dosage and individual tolerance levels are key factors in matcha's effects on women's hormonal health.
