US President Donald Trump oversaw the signing of an expanded ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia at the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Sunday, October 26, 2025, building on a truce he helped broker in July after a deadly five-day border conflict that killed dozens and displaced hundreds of thousands.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet signed the peace deal during the ceremonial event, with Trump having threatened higher tariffs against both countries over the summer to push them into ending hostilities after he called their then-leaders urging them to cease fighting or risk trade talks with Washington being put on hold.

The agreement requires Thailand to release 18 Cambodian soldiers held prisoner and mandates both countries begin removing heavy weapons from the border area, with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim praised for his leadership in facilitating the ceasefire negotiations between the Southeast Asian neighbors.

Anutin nearly missed the signing ceremony after the death of Thailand's Queen Mother Sirikit on Friday but decided to fly in specifically for the ceasefire event on Sunday morning before returning home, skipping the rest of the ASEAN Summit and next week's APEC Summit in South Korea to focus on funeral arrangements.

Trump, who seeks a Nobel Peace Prize and positions himself as a global peacemaker, announced on Truth Social that the peace deal would be signed immediately upon his arrival in Malaysia, expressing condolences to Thailand over the Queen Mother's passing, marking the first stop of his multi-country Asia tour focused on diplomatic and trade discussions with regional leaders.
