The UK government expressed its deep regret for the tragic 1948 Batang Kali massacre that killed unarmed civilians, and acknowledged that the false narrative of the victims as rebel supporters had caused further pain for their families and descendants.

In a letter dated 31 March 2025 to Dato’ Quek Ngee Meng of the Committee to Act to Condemn the Batang Kali Massacre, UK Indo-Pacific Minister Catherine West stressed that the government acknowledged the suffering caused and extended its sympathy to all those affected.

While it was noted that a new inquiry would not be able to reach definitive conclusions after so many decades, the UK stressed the importance of not forgetting the painful past, while highlighting the strong and modern relationship that has now been established with Malaysia.

The letter was a symbolic step in addressing a dark history, while also expressing the hope that through a spirit of friendship and mutual respect, the two countries can continue to strengthen cooperation in the future.
