Philippines Gets Asia's First Disney App. It Means a Lot!
An all-in-one Disney content app has just been launched by Globe Telecom and The Walt Disney Company Southeast Asia at the Glorietta Activity Center in Makati City, making the Philippines its pilot site in Asia and only the second in the world, next to the United Kingdom.
Launched on May 25 was “DisneyLife: The World of Disney in One App” which contains more than 350 Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars movies, over 5,000 TV episodes for kids, and more than 6,000 music tracks.
For a monthly subscription of P149, Disney fans in the Philippines can gain access to this selection of entertainment options which are all downloadable so they can enjoy them anytime even when they’re offline.
“The Filipino consumer is a highly digital and highly engaged consumer on social media,” said The Walt Disney Company Southeast Asia’s EVP and managing director Mahesh Samat to explain why they chose to debut the app in Asia via the Philippines.
“I’m looking forward to seeing what happens and how the Filipino consumer enjoys this app,” he said.
Included in DisneyLife’s movie content are some of the classic and most well-loved cinematic fare in the world such as The Lion King, The Incredibles, and Star Wars as well as top-grossing Disney films in the Philippines of all time. Among these are Iron Man 3, The Avengers, and Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Meanwhile, fans will get the opportunity to be the first audience of new Disney television series episodes as streamed from the biggest library of Disney Kids’ TV programs. Among these are Disney Channel’s Big Hero 6 and Tangled, Disney Junior’s Mickey and the Roadster Racers, and Disney XD’s Spider-Man and Star Wars Rebels.
On the other hand, the app’s musical selection includes memorable soundtracks from Moana, Frozen, Coco, and High School Musical.
“All of these come together in a wide array of content. The content that we make appeals to families and people of all ages – from kids to men, women, youth,” said Samat.
DisneyLife, which has one of the most extensive content in any existing app, also provides consumers with recommendations for their viewing and listening fare as well as built-in controls to allow parents to personalize and manage their kids’ usage of the app.
“From what we’re seeing in our data traffic, it’s going up by 20-30% per quarter,” said Globe’s president and CEO Ernest Cu of the video streaming scene in the Philippines.
“More and more people are buying smartphones. Data shows that video is the number one use case. How would you turn down or not like something where you bring the content with you, watch it anywhere you want when you want, versus the old way of watching where you would have to go home on a certain time just to catch a series,” he added.
The DisneyLife app is available on both Android and iOS devices and downloadable from the App Store and Google Play Store. With each subscription, consumers can create a maximum of six accounts, register up to 10 devices, and watch using a maximum of four screens simultaneously.
