E-commerce Platforms That Dominate Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia's internet economy has hit the US$100 billion mark and among those who're set to enjoy the lion's share are e-commerce platforms.

In fact, according to the e-Conomy SEA 2019 report released by Google, Temasek, and Bain & Company, released in September this year, e-commerce was the largest of the four sectors which led to the figure.

In total, US$38 billion was made by platforms involved in the e-commerce business. And there's good news for this guys: The online market value would exceed US$300 billion by 2025.

The e-commerce race is on.

Despite being highly saturated with over hundreds of e-commerce players in the Southeast Asian region, we're slowly starting to see some potential winners.

As of the third quarter of 2019, Shopee appears to lead its rivals as the most visited platform on mobile and web as well as the most downloaded and with the largest active users.

Neck-and-neck.

While Shopee dominates two of the potentially largest growing markets, Indonesia and Vietnam, Lazada is on total control of four others: Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand.

Shopee also is neck-and-neck with Lazada in terms of the most downloaded app, most visited and highest amount of active users. Other players such as Bukalapak, Wish, AliExpress, and Sendo are not too far behind.

In terms of mobile usage, iPrice notes that Shopee and Lazada dominate this area. However, they're not as competitive when it comes to web site visits.

Plus, both Southeast Asian e-commerce giants are being challenged by the likes of Tokopedia in Indonesia and Sendo in Vietnam when it comes to this area.

Meanwhile, U.S. based e-commerce platform that facilitates transactions between sellers and buyers, Wish, surprised many after appearing as among the top five most downloaded app - a first for the company.

Southeast Asia is also entering the age of ‘shoppertainment’, iPrice notes.
