The Cheapest Destinations in Southeast Asia to Visit

Everyone has heard that some places in the globe are "cheap" to travel to while others are "expensive," but most people struggle to quantify these statements with greater accuracy.

Due to this, Price of Travel released Backpacker Index figures for several cities in late 2010. Below, you'll find a list of the world's most popular travel locations, ranked by cost for backpackers, now completely updated for the year 2022.

The majority of the world's finest travel deals can still be found in Asia and Latin America, but there are a few European towns that are shockingly close to the top of the list.

It's hardly a good idea to visit a city just because it's "cheap," but each of the places on the list below, which includes nearly all of the top vacation destinations in the globe, has something positive to offer.

The currency rates automatically update each day, and all of the prices here are based on information that has been gathered and estimated as of June 2022.

The Backpacker Index is explained in greater detail on each of the regional pages, but the short version is that the platform determined the cost of a selection of items for each destination and converted those costs into US dollars on a daily basis, ensuring that the list is always up to date after exchange rates.

Although this information is geared toward backpackers and budget travelers, individuals with more money to spend should also find it beneficial because the proportions will be virtually the same.

This daily sum for each city includes:

- A dorm bed at a good and cheap hostel
- 3 budget meals
- 2 public transportation rides
- 1 paid cultural attraction
- 3 cheap beers (as an “entertainment fund”)

PriceOfTravel.com have listed all of Asia's major tourist locations from least expensive to most expensive, at least for those on modest budgets, for the tenth consecutive year.

Southeast Asia is still home to some of the most affordable travel locations. Even so, they are usually all extremely reasonable once you get there. The more expensive ones also frequently tend to be the more contemporary ones.

Because hotel rooms in general tend to be so inexpensive, hostels with dorm beds are not nearly as common in Asia as they are in Europe or Australia. A hotel feels even more cost-effective if you can afford a private room for the same price as two bunk beds in a large room. In any case, you can determine which cities are the least and most expensive for hotel guests by looking at our Asia 3-star traveler index.

HOW THE BACKPACKER INDEX WORKS?

Prices for the majority of items are set and unchanging, however depending on who you ask, the cost of a "budget lunch" or a bottle of beer can vary. Our forecasts, however, are supported by extensive study and ought to be extremely accurate.

Prices in each city:

- Half the cost of a double hotel room in locations where there are no hostels for one night on the cheapest bunk at the least costly hostel with good reviews.

- Two daily trips on public transportation

- One expensive or well-known attraction per day (Every city is loaded with free things to do for budget-conscious travelers, but here they take the average cost of a major attraction in each city for each day.)

- Three inexpensive dinners each day (They took our minimum meal price and added 20 percent to make it more realistic for a longer trip.)

- As a "entertainment fund," three inexpensive local beers every day. This is a broad benchmark that should be proportionate for each city because non-drinkers may choose to eat dessert and coffee or go to a local concert instead.
