What is Sustainable Aviation Fuel That Used by Cebu Pacific Airlines?

First Philippine airline to use SAF for commercial flights is Cebu Pacific. The low-cost carrier signed an MoU with Shell Aviation for the supply of SAF beginning in 2026, and today's flight follows that agreement.

Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is a type of biofuel that is made from natural oils found in non-edible sources including algae and waste oils and fats. Since SAF has the potential to dramatically lower greenhouse gas emissions than conventional jet fuel, it is thought to be a more environmentally friendly substitute.

A Philippine-based airline named Cebu Pacific revealed that it has begun utilizing SAF on some of its flights. The SAF is used on its aircraft in a blend with regular jet fuel. As a result, it is anticipated that the airline will reduce its yearly carbon emissions by about 2,400 tons.

This action is a component of the company's sustainability initiatives to lessen its influence on the environment. By utilizing SAF, the airline may lessen its reliance on fossil fuels and its carbon emissions. As the technology advances and becomes more accessible, the company hopes to employ SAF more frequently in the future.

Several airlines all over the world already use sustainable aviation fuel or have intentions to do so (SAF). Several instances include:

1. Lufthansa: The German carrier started using SAF on a few of its flights in 2011 and plans to utilize 1 million gallons of the fuel annually by 2020.

2. United Airlines: To cut greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by the year 2050, the American airline announced plans to start using SAF on a small number of its flights in 2020.

3. Air France-KLM: The French-Dutch airline revealed intentions to start utilizing SAF on a small number of its flights in 2020 in an effort to cut its carbon emissions in half by the year 2050.

4. Finnair: To cut its carbon emissions by 80% by 2035, the Finnish airline announced plans to start using SAF on certain of its flights in 2020.

5. Alaska Airlines: To cut its carbon emissions by 50% by 2050, the American airline revealed plans to start using SAF on some of its flights in 2020.

6. Qantas: The Australian airline revealed intentions to start using SAF on a small number of its flights in 2022 in an effort to cut its carbon emissions in half by the year 2050.

7. Japan Airlines: To cut its carbon emissions by 50% by the year 2050, the Japanese airline announced plans to start using SAF on certain of its flights in 2022.

These are just a few instances, but numerous other airlines are also investigating or testing the use of SAF as a means to lessen their influence on the environment.
