Starting July 15, 2024, Thailand is expanding its visa-free program to welcome tourists from 93 countries and territories, up from the previous 57 countries.

This privilege allows visitors from these countries to explore the Land of Smiles for 60 days without the hassle of obtaining a visa. Citizens from eligible countries will be welcomed both as tourists and for short-term business purposes.

In addition to the expanded visa-free program, Thailand is also easing access to Visa on Arrival (VOA) for 31 countries, previously limited to 19 countries. Visitors may stay for a period not exceeding 15 days for tourist purposes under this scheme. The fee for a visa is 2,000 baht.

This announcement was made by the spokesperson for Thailand's Ministry of Interior, Traisuree Taisaranakul, who also emphasized that the regulations must be published in the Royal Gazette before they can take effect.

Also beginning on July 15, the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) will be introduced for digital workers, freelancers, and visitors wishing to learn skills such as cooking and martial arts. This visa is valid for five years and allows a stay of up to 180 days.

Foreigners must have proof of funds or a guarantee of at least 500,000 baht for the duration of stay to apply for this visa. The fee for the visa is 10,000 Baht.

DTVs, along with their spouse and dependent children, have the right to stay in Thailand for a period of 5 years. The maximum cumulative stay is 180 days, with the possibility of an additional 180-day extension.

Furthermore, students who earn a bachelor's degree or higher in Thailand can stay for one year after graduation to seek employment, travel, or engage in other activities.

In June, authorities extended the operational fee waiver for hotels for two years and canceled plans for a tourism fee for visitors arriving by plane.

Tourism, a vital sector for Thailand's economy, shows signs of recovery post-pandemic. A total of 17.5 million international tourists explored the Land of Smiles in the first six months of 2024, a 35% increase compared to the same period last year.

Although still below pre-pandemic levels, optimism surrounds the industry. The majority of visitors came from China, Malaysia, and India, generating tourism revenue of 858 billion baht ($23.6 billion).

The beauty of Thailand, from its glittering golden temples, stunning white sandy beaches, and picturesque mountains to its vibrant nightlife, continues to captivate tourists. The relaxation of visa rules, including the expansion of the visa-free and visa-on-arrival programs, is part of the government's efforts to attract more visitors.
