Since 1999, Skytrax has set the global benchmark for airport quality through its annual customer satisfaction surveys. The resulting World Airport Awards cover a range of categories, from best overall airport to special awards for specific facilities and services.
With more than 500 airports worldwide participating, the World Airport Awards provide a comprehensive overview of global airport service quality. Free from commercial influence as there are no entry fees, these awards provide travellers with a credible reference point for choosing the best airports. This independent survey allows passengers to make more informed decisions before travelling.
In the category World's Best PRM (passengers with reduced mobility) and Accessible Facilities category in the latest Skytrax World Airport Awards, Tokyo Haneda Airport took first place and was also ranked third as the World's Best Airport. As a representative of Southeast Asia, Singapore Changi Airport appeared on the list in fifth place.
A number of criteria were used to determine the winners of the World's Best PRM and Accessible Facilities awards. These criteria include: passenger pick-up and drop-off areas at terminals; accessibility throughout the airport; designated parking for passengers with reduced mobility; wheelchair services; help points; priority immigration counters; priority seating; and toilets and changing facilities that meet accessibility standards for passengers with various types of disabilities, including hidden disabilities.
According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), one billion people around the world have a disability, and many of them experience travel restrictions. This highlights the urgent need for better facilities and services for travellers with disabilities.
However, due to legislation such as the Air Carrier Access Act and Regulation 1107/2006, there has been a significant improvement in support for travellers with disabilities over the last few decades.
