Want to stay productive during your flight? Or just relax and stream your favourite movies? Good news for you! Several airlines now offer super-fast and stable internet connections.
Based on reviews left by travellers on Skytrax, technology website ElectronicsHub has identified airlines and airports with both strong and weak connectivity. Interestingly, airlines with very strong in-flight Wi-Fi services are predominantly from Asia.
Sixteen of the top twenty airlines are from that continent. Fierce competition among them drives Asian airlines to continually innovate and improve their services, including fast and stable Internet connectivity.
Garuda Indonesia, the national airline of Indonesia, has demonstrated outstanding performance in inflight internet connectivity, making it the airline with the best Wi-Fi in the world. This ranking is followed by other regional Asian airlines such as Asiana Airlines (South Korea) and ANA All Nippon Airways (Japan). With a score of 4.12, Garuda Indonesia significantly outperforms these two airlines, which scored 3.81 and 3.76 respectively.
Garuda Indonesia offers free Wi-Fi for first class passengers. However, economy class passengers have to pay at least US$11.95 for the same service. Nevertheless, the state-owned airline offers all passengers 15 minutes of free internet access on certain flights.
As well as a ranking of airlines with the best Wi-Fi, there is also a ranking of those with the worst. The top spot for the worst in-flight Wi-Fi connection is held by another Asian airline, Thai Lion Air, with a score of 1.00.
Cebu Pacific from the Philippines and Wizz Air from Hungary are not far behind with scores of 1.03 and 1.06 respectively. Interestingly, Europe dominates this worst list, making up ten of the twenty worst airlines.
