Talk about tennis in Indonesia, this sport actually already existed since 1935 and until today, there's few local competitions are still held in Indonesia at the regional level. But sadly, this sport may not be too popular such as soccer or badminton. In Indonesia, Tennis actually still one of the sports being contested at PON XXI 2024.
Not only in local tournaments, but Indonesian tennis athletes are also active in taking part in international events. In September 2024, Aldila Sutjiadi reached the semifinals of the US Open 2024 in the mixed doubles category. Also recently, Janice Tjen claimed victory at the ITF W15 Antalya tournament in Turkey both for women’s single and double.

In this competition, Janice Tjen win both of single and double categories. In double category, she teamed up with Taiwanese player Madeleine Jessup in doubles, competing in four matches, including the final.
In her first final game on November 30, they faced Romania's Briana Szabo and Stefania Bojica in a three-set battle, following another three-set match earlier. Seeing at the final score, this match was the second most intense, following their earlier three-set match in the round of 16 against representatives from Russia.
Then a day after that, on December 1 Janice Tjen was plays another final game. This time she win against Nadia Lagaev from Canada after winning two-set match with 1-6 and 2-6.
Janice Tjen's Early Career
Janice Tjen is an Indonesian tennis player, born in Jakarta on May 6, 2002. She began her tennis career in 2015 and quickly made a mark in the sport by participating in two International Junior Tennis Competitions during her first year. In that initial season, she achieved a record of four wins and two losses, with her best performance being a quarterfinal appearance in one of the tournaments.
In 2017, she reached a significant milestone in her junior career by winning his first trophy. It was a standout year for her, as he claimed victory in three international tournaments, an impressive achievement out of the 13 events she participated in.
Janice Tjen's Senior Career
Janice Tjen began her senior career in 2022. However, she was unsuccessful in her first three senior-level competitions.
Tjen's second year as a senior has been marked by extraordinary success. She got 7 trophies from 11 international tournaments in 2024, she has surged to the 1395th position in the ITF rankings and the 577th position in the WTA rankings.
Other than that, she also claimed a gold medal at the PON XXI 2024 women's singles event, representing West Java.
The 2024 ITF Women's World Tennis Tour
The 2024 International Tennis Federation (ITF) Women's World Tennis Tour serves as the entry-level and mid-level circuit for professional women's tennis. Organized by the International Tennis Federation, this tour operates one tier below the WTA Challenger series, which is part of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Tour.
W15 itself means a tournament specifically for women with a prize of 15 points. These points will later be used to determine the ITF ranking. Along with the points, participants will also receive cash prizes ranging from $15,000 to $100,000, depending on the level of the competition they are involved in.
Besides W15, there are also W35, W50, W75 and W100, where the higher the level, the bigger the points and cash prizes.
Other Southeast Asia Players Ranking on ITF and WTA
Talk about other Southeast Asian rankings, Thailand leads the region in 2024 with Mananchaya Sawangkaew ranked 132nd in the WTA and Punnin Kovapitukted holding the 236th spot in the ITF. Meanwhile, Indonesia's other representative, Priska Madelyn Nugroho, is ranked 672nd in the ITF and 406th in the WTA.
Even Jenice Tjen still far from the best player from Southeast Asia on both ITF and WTA ranks, but by seeing her age, her journey on Tennis is still long way to go.
