Get to Know Burgerkill The First Indonesian Metal Band that Achieves an International Award

Burgerkill or also known as BK for short was a famous meta in Indonesia besides Jasad, Siksakubur, Noxa etc. The band was established in Bandung in 1995. The first lineup was Eben as a guitarist, Ivan as a vocalist, Kimung as a bassist and Dadan as a Drummer. 

But now, after the death of the dearests Ivan and Eben and an in-out some of the personnel, the latest formation of Burgerkill is Ronald on the vocal, Agung on the guitar, Ramdhan on the bass and Puput on the drum. Not only famous in Indonesia, but it’s music is also famous throughout the world. Burgerkil has been played in renowned metal music festivals in Europe. 

Burgerkill has played in the Wacken Open Air Festival which is located in Germany and Bloodstock, the UK’s biggest independent metal festival, in the United Kingdom.  Recently, in 2024, The band has toured some European countries, such as Hungary, Netherlands, the Czech Republic and Germany.

The Winner of Golden Gods Awards 2013 by England Metal Music Magazine Metal Hammer

Being the winner of this category was totally unpredicted by any member. It was a proud and memorable memory for the Indonesian metal scene. With that, Burgerkill is the first Indonesian metal band to achieve an international award.

In this category, Burgerkill faced big names, such as Jason Newsted, Pussy Riot, Nergal and Sea Shepherd. Metal Hammer, in it’s publication, described Burgerkill as worthy to win this category and praising it as a pioneer in 2013. Also, Metal Hammer praised Burgerkill music video with title Under the Scars, the song from it’s album Venomous.

Peaking as the Top 10 Best Indonesian Metal Bands by Metal Hammer

As a report published by Louder Sound, Dom Lawson, who has been a music journalist since 1999, chose Burgerkill as a leader of the top in the Indonesian metal scene. The publication was published on August 22, 2016.

As a fun fact, Dom Lawson was involved in the fifth Burgerkill album; Adamantine. Adamantine itself is a giving name from him. The title, Adamantine, means unbeaten. Before that, Integral was supposed to be the title of this album. This name was taken from one title song of the album. The album itself tells about unity. He also was involved in the lyrics and singing in a song called United Front.

Entered as 50 the Best Metal Bands of All Time

Again, England Metal Music Magazine Metal Hammer nominated Burgerkill in it’s publication, 50 the Best Metal Bands of All Time. The publication was published in 2020. It was a big surprise and advanced development for the metal music scene in Indonesia. 

Burgerkill stood in the fourteenth position, outperforming Motorhead, Lamb of God and even Ramstein. Everybody thought it was an unpredicted surprise, but it wasn’t for Metal Hammer. For Metal Hammer, Burgerkill is like a talisman. 

“Burgerkill has been a talisman, not only for Indonesia but also for metal music worldwide. It’s hard work spreads a message on a global scale. The position maybe shocked everyone, but you shouldn't. The band that was established in a conservative religious environment in Bandung 25 years ago has created a big fan base that will be growing,” tells Metal Hammer.
