Myanmar, despite frequent political turmoil, holds a stunning natural treasure trove. At its northern tip, Hkakabo Razi rises 5,881 meters above sea level. It's not only the highest mountain in Myanmar, but also the "roof" of Southeast Asia.
Located in Kachin State, bordering China to the northeast and India to the west, this mountain is more than just a mere figure. It's a mystery hidden beneath the jungle, an extreme challenge that calls to the adventurous spirit.
Part of Myanmar's Largest National Park
Hkakabo Razi is a mountain that forms part of Hkakabo Razi National Park. Established in 1998, this protected area, and the largest national park in Myanmar, spans 3,810 km². It's no wonder this park holds the prestigious status of an ASEAN Heritage Park.
Adjacent to Hponkan Razi National Park (established in 2003, 2,700 km²), this area boasts a stunningly pristine mountain landscape. In the lowlands, tropical broadleaf evergreen rainforest stretches.
At altitudes in the cool subtropical zone (2,400–2,700 meters above sea level), there are semi-deciduous broadleaf forests, and evergreen coniferous snow forests. Climbing Hkakabo Razi is a journey through the pristine layers of Earth's life.
Difficult Climbing Terrain
Climbing this mountain is no ordinary tourist activity, but rather a demanding expedition that tests physical and mental limits. The nickname "Anti-Everest" given to it by many professional climbers is no idle boast.
Unlike Everest, which has established routes and extensive logistical support, Hkakabo Razi offers a truly ancient climbing experience. Even before reaching the foot of the mountain, the adventure begins with a long trek through dense, humid, dark tropical forest, teeming with the sounds and potential of wild animals.
It can take up to a month just to reach the summit. There are no porters on hand to help transport supplies. Logistics, navigation, and all expedition needs are entirely the responsibility of the climber.
Takashi Ozaki, the first climber to conquer the summit, called the mountain "a treasure trove of mysteries." Its rugged terrain, unpredictable weather, and extreme isolation make Hkakabo Razi both a dream and a paradise for true climbers who crave a challenge.
Its Height Was Once Unknown
Despite its towering height, its exact height was once a mystery. In 1996, Takashi Ozaki made history by becoming the first human to set foot on the mountain's summit. Unfortunately, his expedition lacked a GPS device. This remarkable achievement failed to reveal the true secret of its height.
In 2013, a glimmer of hope emerged. A joint American and Myanmar expedition successfully reached the summit, this time equipped with altitude measuring instruments. Their measurements showed a figure of 5,870 meters above sea level. However, this result was not considered final and conclusive.
In November 2014, a joint team from National Geographic and The North Face conducted a special scientific expedition. Using the latest technology, they successfully measured and confirmed that Hkakabo Razi's official height was 5,881 meters above sea level. This figure was then officially established, cementing its status as the highest peak in Southeast Asia.
A Hidden Biodiversity Paradise
The greatness of Hkakabo Razi lies not only in its height and rugged terrain, but also in the rich biodiversity within its National Park. This mountain and its surrounding forests are the last stronghold for many unique species. Rare mammals such as the Red Panda, the Red Goral (a type of mountain goat), the Takin, and various species of deer.
The flora is no less enchanting. Exotic orchids adorn the trees, including the extremely rare Black Orchid (Paphiopedilum wardii). Large trees such as Hemlock, Cypress, and the giant Fig tree form a stunning forest canopy.

Every step on the hiking trail, though arduous, holds the potential for unexpected encounters with stunning wildlife. It is the crowning glory of adventure, the ultimate dream of Southeast Asia, waiting to be conquered.
