Google’s Currency Exchange Glitch: Rupiah Mistakenly Strengthened to IDR 8,000 per USD

Indonesian Rupiah temporarily displayed as stronger than actual value due to Google search glitch.

Google has acknowledged an error in displaying the exchange rate of the Indonesian Rupiah against the US Dollar and Euro on its search service on Saturday (1/2). 

The mistake caused the Rupiah to appear significantly stronger, with the displayed exchange rate reaching approximately IDR 8,000 per US Dollar and Euro.

Cause of the Error: Data from a Third-Party Source

A representative from Google Indonesia explained that the information displayed on Google Search was sourced from a third-party provider. In a statement by CNN Indonesia, Google recognized the inaccuracy in the exchange rate data and immediately contacted the data provider to rectify the issue.

"We are aware of an issue affecting the exchange rate information for the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) on Google Search. Currency conversion data comes from a third-party source. When we noticed the inaccuracy, we immediately contacted the data provider to correct the error as soon as possible," said a Google Indonesia representative.

Impact of the Exchange Rate Display Error

Previously, Google’s search service displayed the Rupiah to Euro exchange rate at IDR 8,348.50. However, financial services such as BCA indicated that the actual exchange rate of the Rupiah to Euro was around IDR 16,889.

This error confused the public and market participants who rely on Google Search for quick access to currency exchange rate information.

Bank Indonesia’s Response to the Data Error

In response to this incident, according to CNN Indonesia, the Head of the Communications Department at Bank Indonesia, Ramdan Denny Prakoso, emphasized that the data displayed by Google did not reflect the actual exchange rate. He also stated that Bank Indonesia had coordinated with Google Indonesia to ensure the error was promptly corrected.

"The USD/IDR exchange rate level of IDR 8,100 as shown on Google is not the actual level," Ramdan explained in a written statement on Saturday (1/2). "We are coordinating with Google Indonesia regarding this discrepancy to implement the necessary corrections as soon as possible."
