China, through the National Immigration Administration (NIA), has officially implemented a visa-free policy for tour groups from ASEAN countries, allowing them to visit Xishuangbanna, Yunnan, for up to six days.
Effective from February 10, this policy permits groups of at least two travelers from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
To qualify for visa-free entry, tourists must book their trip through a Chinese travel agency and enter and exit the country together as a group. These tour groups can enter China without a visa through several designated entry points, including Xishuangbanna Gasa International Airport, Mohan Railway Port, and Mohan Land Port.
Since its implementation, the first tour group from Thailand and Laos arrived in Xishuangbanna on February 19, receiving a warm welcome with a traditional water-splashing ceremony and cultural performances. Over the next six days, they will explore the region’s natural beauty, local cuisine, and ethnic heritage.
China Opens Borders Wider
This visa-free policy aims not only to boost tourism in southwestern China but also to strengthen China-ASEAN relations through cultural and economic exchanges. Additionally, China plans to further ease visa regulations to attract more international tourists and business travelers, supporting the expansion of its tourism market.
Currently, China has established mutual visa exemptions with 25 countries, a unilateral visa-free policy for 38 countries, and a transit visa-free policy for 54 countries.
Xishuangbanna: China’s Tropical Escape
Xishuangbanna, an autonomous prefecture in southern Yunnan bordering Laos and Myanmar, is renowned for its lush tropical rainforests and the rich cultural heritage of the Dai ethnic group, whose traditions closely resemble those of Thailand.
The region is also home to distinctive temples and serves as a hub for eco-tourism, making it one of the top destinations for both domestic and international travelers.
As China’s gateway to Southeast Asia, Xishuangbanna continues to grow as a major tourist destination, attracting over 70 million visitors in 2024—a 13.44% increase from the previous year.
