Laos is once again capturing global attention, this time as the world’s most affordable travel destination for 2025. With exceptionally low daily travel costs and breathtaking natural landscapes, the country is shining brighter than ever on the international tourism map.
The news was first reported by Travel and Tour World, citing a recent study conducted by Canadian financial platform HelloSafe.
World’s Lowest Travel Costs: Just £12.30 Per Day
According to HelloSafe’s analysis of 131 countries, Laos emerged as the most budget-friendly travel destination in the world, with average daily expenses of just £12.30. This figure includes basic costs such as accommodation, food, and transportation.
Kazakhstan and Rwanda followed in second and third place, with daily costs of £15.10 and £16.60, respectively.
This finding positions Laos as a top choice for global travelers seeking authentic and affordable experiences—especially in comparison to increasingly crowded and expensive destinations like Bali and Thailand.
Although it is the only landlocked country in Southeast Asia, Laos offers no less allure than its coastal neighbors.
Tourism Boom in Laos
Laos is experiencing a rapid surge in tourism. In 2024 alone, the country welcomed more than 4.1 million international visitors—a 21% increase compared to the previous year.
The Lao government aims to further boost that number to 4.3 million international arrivals in 2025, with total tourism revenue projected to exceed US$1 billion and an average stay of 10 days per visitor.
One notable contributor to this growth is the United Kingdom. British visitors accounted for 1.11% of total tourist arrivals in the first half of 2024—a 56% increase compared to 2019.
Tourism in regions like Vientiane Province has also surged. In the first quarter of 2025 alone, the province recorded 902,057 visitors. Key attractions such as the 1st Nam Ngum Reservoir, the Xong River, and Vang Vieng have become magnets for tourists, offering everything from tranquil boat rides to adrenaline-pumping activities like bungee jumping and paramotoring.
Natural Beauty and Culture: Laos’ Strongest Attractions
Laos offers a rare combination of unspoiled natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. From the majestic flow of the Mekong River and crystal-clear waterfalls to dense tropical jungles and hidden caves, the country delivers awe-inspiring experiences—without the crowds often found in neighboring destinations.
At the heart of Laos' cultural appeal is Luang Prabang, an ancient town recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This historic gem has earned numerous international accolades, including the top spot in Lonely Planet’s Best Places to Visit in Asia for 2025, as well as a place in Time magazine’s list of the 50 Greatest Places to Visit.
Most recently, Luang Prabang secured third place in the Green Destinations Top 100 Story Awards, under the category of Destination Management. The award acknowledges its inclusive, sustainable tourism practices and effective visitor management.
Budget Travel Without Compromising on Quality
For travelers on a budget, Laos is nothing short of a dream destination. According to The British Guild of Beer Writers, a glass of local beer costs just £0.79—making it one of the cheapest in the world.
Combining affordability with cultural richness and stunning natural landscapes, Laos delivers exceptional value that is hard to beat. It's no surprise the country is gaining momentum among global travelers seeking high-quality experiences without high costs.
