Nepal officially inaugurated Sushila Karki, a 73-year-old former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, as interim prime minister on September 12, 2025. Karki is not only the first female prime minister in Nepal’s history but also the first leader in the world to be elected through a virtual vote on the Discord app.

The decision came after massive protests shook Nepal, forcing the resignation of Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli and leaving more than 50 people dead.

Amid the power vacuum, young demonstrators from the Hami Nepal movement decided to seek an alternative leader through online forums. The outcome was that Sushila Karki emerged as the top choice.

A Political Decision Unlike Any Other

The process of electing Karki was nothing short of revolutionary. Instead of traditional elections, parliamentary votes, or decisions made by political parties, the choice was made through open discussions on Discord, a chat platform popular among gamers.

Thousands of members, including the Nepali diaspora, joined the forum called “Youth Against Corruption.” They debated visions, challenged candidates, and even livestreamed the discussions on YouTube so that more people could participate.

After hours of heated debate, five names made it to the final list: Dharan mayor Harka Sampang, innovation activist Mahabir Pun, independent politician Sagar Dhakal, legal activist Rastra Bimochan Timalsina also known as “Random Nepali,” and Sushila Karki.

From this direct voting process, Karki emerged as the winner.

From the Streets to the Virtual Arena

Karki’s victory cannot be separated from the wave of protests led by Nepal’s younger generation.

At first, their anger was fueled by the lavish lifestyles of officials’ children, nicknamed “Nepo Kids,” flaunted on social media while unemployment and economic inequality worsened. The situation escalated when the government announced a ban on more than two dozen popular apps including Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and Discord.

Protests erupted. Thousands of students and university youth poured into the streets, some still wearing school uniforms, carrying posters, and waving pirate flags inspired by the manga One Piece as a symbol of resistance against a corrupt “world government.”

Yet what began as peaceful demonstrations turned tragic when security forces used tear gas, rubber bullets, and even live ammunition. Dozens were killed, hundreds injured, and public anger exploded. Crowds set fire to the parliament building, the Singha Durbar government complex, and the homes of senior officials.

Amid the chaos, Discord emerged as an alternative parliament.

Who is Sushila Karki?

For Nepal’s younger generation, Karki represents a clean and principled figure. Her track record as a judge showed her courage in standing against corruption and nepotism. In 2012, she was part of a ruling that convicted a minister on corruption charges.

During her tenure as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court from 2016 to 2017, she rejected political interference in the appointment of a police chief. That decision nearly led to her impeachment, yet it strengthened her reputation instead. She became known as a defender of meritocracy and judicial independence.

This reputation made her name trusted in the Discord forum. Even Balen Shah, the mayor of Kathmandu and a popular rapper, openly voiced his support for Karki, although many participants had initially proposed him as a candidate.

Karki’s First Step was to Dissolve Parliament

After being sworn in by President Ram Chandra Paudel, Karki immediately made a bold move by dissolving parliament and scheduling new elections for March 5, 2026. In her inaugural speech, she emphasized that she had no intention of staying in power for long.

“We will not stay here more than six months in any situation. We will complete our responsibilities and pledge to hand over to the next parliament and ministers,” Karki declared.

Her administration is therefore an interim one, designed only to safeguard the transition until the next election.

A Digital Democracy Experiment

Many analysts have described this moment as a digital democracy experiment. For the public, choosing a leader through Discord was far more transparent than traditional politics conducted behind closed doors. Anyone could join, ask questions, and even challenge the candidates directly.

But the risks are significant. Can such a model be recognized as legitimate? How can manipulation be prevented, and how can stability be maintained in a country that has just emerged from crisis?

Nepal now stands at a crossroads, with the possibility of becoming an example of democratic innovation or falling into prolonged political uncertainty.

Regardless of the outcome, Nepal has already marked a new chapter in global politics by becoming the first nation to elect a head of government through a platform no one ever expected.
