The Philippines officially launched the logo and theme for its ASEAN Chairmanship 2026 on 14 November, marking the beginning of the diplomatic and technical preparations ahead of next year’s ASEAN Summit.

The newly unveiled logo features four key symbols: the rice stalk, the weave pattern, the wave and the balangay. Together, they convey a strategic message about ASEAN’s identity and future direction.

Rice Stalk

The rice stalk symbolizes prosperity and food security, one of the region’s priority issues. Each yellow grain represents a member state of ASEAN, while the eleventh grain marks the entry of Timor-Leste as the newest member of the regional community.

Weave Pattern

The weave pattern reflects the strength that emerges from the interconnectedness of Southeast Asian nations. It represents the diverse cultures, values, and aspirations that come together to form a unified and resilient regional identity.

Each yellow strand signifies the unique contribution of every member state to the region’s progress, underscoring that diversity lies at the heart of ASEAN’s identity.

Wave

The blue wave element symbolizes ASEAN’s commitment to maritime security and cooperation.
It references the waters that link all member states, spaces that have long served as channels of trade, interaction, and regional solidarity.

Balangay

The balangay, the only element depicted in red, draws inspiration from the traditional pre-colonial Filipino boat.

It serves as a metaphor for ASEAN’s collective journey, distinct nations with different identities moving forward in the same direction. The symbol reflects solidarity, unity, and the shared determination to confront regional challenges together.

Philippines’ Focus: Ethical and Responsible Use of AI

Alongside the launch, the government outlined its policy direction for its upcoming ASEAN Chairmanship.

In his speech, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. emphasized that the Philippines will prioritize the development of policies related to artificial intelligence (AI).

“In the area of peace and security, our Chairship will highlight the responsible and ethical use of emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), to strengthen ASEAN’s capacity to anticipate and to respond to new and evolving security challenges,” he said.

The Philippines also highlighted the use of AI for early warning systems, maritime domain monitoring, as well as humanitarian assistance and disaster response. Beyond security, AI will be discussed in the context of digital economic development, support for MSMEs, and strengthening regional competitiveness.

Under the socio-cultural pillar, AI will be directed toward expanding access to healthcare services, improving education quality, and enhancing youth empowerment.

Theme for 2026: “Navigating Our Future, Together”

The ASEAN 2026 theme underscores three major priorities: strengthening peace and security, building corridors of prosperity, and empowering communities across the region.

A series of meetings will take place in various cities—including Manila, Cebu, Bohol, Boracay, Laoag, Iloilo, Tagaytay, and Clark—to showcase the Philippines’ cultural diversity and reinforce ties among member states.
