Powering Growth Without Wasting Energy
Southeast Asia is among the world's fastest-growing economic regions. Home to more than 680 million people, ASEAN continues to experience rising living standards, expanding industries, and increasing electricity consumption.
According to the ASEAN Centre for Energy, regional energy demand is expected to continue climbing significantly over the coming decades as urban populations expand and economies modernize. Without greater efficiency, countries may need to invest billions of dollars in additional power generation while increasing dependence on fossil fuels.
Energy efficiency offers an alternative pathway.

Energy experts estimate that cooling can account for up to 70 percent of peak electricity demand in some urban areas during the hottest periods of the year. Without improvements in efficiency, this surge places considerable strain on electricity networks and increases the likelihood of supply shortages during periods of high demand.
The solution does not necessarily require sacrificing comfort. Modern inverter air conditioners consume substantially less electricity than older conventional models, while maintaining indoor temperatures between 24 and 26 degrees Celsius and using ceiling fans can significantly reduce monthly electricity bills.
Studies also suggest that ambitious efficiency measures could dramatically reduce future electricity demand. In Indonesia, widespread adoption of efficient technologies could potentially eliminate the need for dozens of new medium-sized power plants over the coming decades, saving both financial resources and carbon emissions.
ASEAN's Shared Energy Vision
Recognizing these opportunities, ASEAN member states have placed energy efficiency at the center of regional cooperation.
Through the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC), member countries have committed to reducing regional energy intensity by 32 percent while accelerating the transition toward cleaner and more sustainable energy systems.
These ambitions are increasingly reflected in the design of Southeast Asia's cities.
Singapore continues expanding its internationally recognized Green Mark certification for sustainable buildings. Kuala Lumpur is integrating smart energy management into new commercial developments. Jakarta is encouraging greener construction standards, while Vietnam and Thailand are investing in more efficient industrial production.
Modern office towers increasingly use artificial intelligence to optimize lighting, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, reducing unnecessary electricity consumption without compromising occupant comfort.
Such innovations demonstrate that energy efficiency is becoming a driver of competitiveness as well as sustainability.
Small Changes, Significant Savings
While national policies play an essential role, the transition also depends on millions of everyday decisions.
Across Southeast Asia, micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises form the backbone of local economies. For neighborhood cafés, bakeries, workshops, and retail shops, electricity represents a major operational expense. Replacing traditional lighting with LED systems, maintaining refrigerators and cooling equipment, and switching off unused appliances can reduce operating costs considerably while improving business resilience.
Households can contribute just as meaningfully. Many electronic devices continue consuming electricity even when switched off but left plugged in. Eliminating these "phantom loads" by unplugging chargers, televisions, and kitchen appliances when not in use helps reduce unnecessary consumption throughout the year.
These seemingly modest actions become powerful when adopted by millions of households across ASEAN.
Lower Bills, Cleaner Skies
The benefits of energy efficiency extend far beyond electricity savings.
Much of Southeast Asia's electricity generation still relies on coal and natural gas. Every unit of electricity conserved therefore reduces greenhouse gas emissions while improving local air quality and lowering demand for fossil fuels.
Energy efficiency also strengthens national energy security by reducing dependence on imported fuels and delaying the need for costly investments in new power infrastructure.
For coastal cities already confronting rising sea levels, stronger storms, and increasingly unpredictable weather, reducing emissions through efficiency forms part of the broader effort to build climate resilience.
