Two of Southeast Asia’s top clubs, Buriram United and Johor Darul Ta'zim, have successfully advanced to the quarter-finals of the AFC Champions League Elite.
Thailand’s number one club Buriram United and Malaysia’s dominant side Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) both delivered impressive performances in the Round of 16. Buriram overcame Australian club Melbourne City FC with a 2–1 aggregate victory.
Meanwhile, JDT produced a surprising result by defeating a Japanese club with a 3–2 aggregate score, securing their place among the final eight teams in Asia’s premier club competition.
This achievement can be considered historic for Southeast Asian football, as two clubs from the region have reached the Top 8 of Asia’s highest-tier club competition since the new ACL Elite format was introduced in the 2024–25 season. The AFC Champions League Elite is the revamped version of Asia’s top club tournament, replacing the previous AFC Champions League format.
For Buriram United, this also marks back-to-back quarter-final appearances. In the previous edition, Buriram reached the quarter-finals after eliminating JDT in the Round of 16.
Interestingly, both teams have now advanced to the quarter-finals this season, and based on the current bracket, there is a strong possibility that Buriram and JDT could face each other in the quarter-finals. However, the official fixture will still depend on confirmation from the Asian Football Confederation.
The strong performances of both clubs come as no surprise given their dominance in their respective domestic leagues. Buriram United currently sit comfortably at the top of Thai League 1, holding a 13-point lead over second-placed Port FC.
On the other hand, JDT continue to dominate the Malaysia Super League. The Malaysian giants have recorded a perfect record of 18 wins from 18 matches, collecting 54 points and sitting 15 points clear of second-placed Selangor FC. They have also officially secured their 12th consecutive Malaysia Super League title.
The success of Buriram United and Johor Darul Ta’zim should serve as an example for other Southeast Asian clubs. By raising their standards in management, infrastructure, and squad quality, clubs from the region can become more competitive and make a greater impact on the Asian stage.
Once again, congratulations to Buriram United and Johor Darul Ta’zim for reaching the quarter-finals of the AFC Champions League Elite.
