Home to some of Earth's oldest tropical rainforests, the region is both a global climate stabilizer and one of the world's richest reservoirs of biodiversity. At the same time, these forests continue to face mounting pressure from land conversion, infrastructure expansion, and climate change.

Protecting Southeast Asia's forests is no longer solely a regional responsibility. It is an investment in the future of the planet.

The Green Heart of the Tropics

Stretching across Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Papua New Guinea and parts of mainland Southeast Asia, the forests of Borneo, Sumatra and New Guinea form one of the world's largest remaining tropical rainforest systems.

These forests absorb billions of tonnes of carbon dioxide, helping slow global climate change while regulating rainfall patterns that sustain agriculture throughout the region. Indonesia alone possesses the world's third-largest area of tropical rainforest, while Southeast Asia hosts extraordinary biodiversity despite occupying only a small portion of Earth's land surface.

The region is also home to the world's largest concentration of tropical peat-swamp forests. Unlike ordinary forests, peatlands store vast amounts of carbon underground. When left undisturbed, they act as long-term carbon sinks. However, when drained for agriculture or development, they release enormous quantities of greenhouse gases and become highly susceptible to devastating fires that produce transboundary haze across ASEAN countries.

As the late Indonesian environmental leader Professor Emil Salim once said, "Environmental conservation is not an obstacle to development. It is a prerequisite for sustainable development." His words remain increasingly relevant as Southeast Asia seeks to balance economic growth with ecological protection.

The First Guardians of the Forest

Long before protected areas and national parks existed, Southeast Asia's forests were cared for by indigenous peoples and local communities whose lives have been intertwined with nature for generations.

From the Dayak communities of Kalimantan to indigenous peoples in the Philippines and forest-dependent villages in Thailand, traditional knowledge has shaped sustainable ways of managing forests while preserving biodiversity. Numerous international studies have shown that forests managed by indigenous communities often experience lower rates of deforestation than areas managed solely through conventional enforcement.

Recognizing this, several ASEAN countries have expanded community-based forest management.

Indonesia's Perhutanan Sosial, or Social Forestry Programme, has granted millions of hectares of forest management rights to local communities, allowing them to protect forests while developing sustainable livelihoods through agroforestry, ecotourism, non-timber forest products, and traditional agriculture.

Similar initiatives in Thailand and the Philippines have demonstrated that empowering communities can strengthen both conservation and rural development.

Forests Under Pressure

Despite their global significance, Southeast Asia's forests continue to face considerable challenges.

Agricultural expansion remains one of the primary drivers of deforestation, particularly through the growth of oil palm, rubber, and pulpwood plantations. Mining activities, road construction, and large infrastructure projects have further fragmented once-continuous forests into isolated patches.

This fragmentation creates serious consequences for wildlife. Species such as the Sumatran elephant, Malayan tiger, orangutan and clouded leopard depend on extensive connected habitats to survive. When forests become divided by roads or plantations, animal populations become isolated, increasing the risk of human-wildlife conflict and reducing long-term genetic diversity.

The impacts extend beyond biodiversity. Forest degradation also affects water security, increases flood risks, reduces soil fertility, and weakens the natural resilience of communities facing increasingly unpredictable climate conditions.

Technology Joins the Fight

Encouragingly, forest conservation across Southeast Asia is entering a new era driven by innovation.

Conservation organizations in Malaysia, Vietnam and Indonesia are increasingly deploying heavy-lift drones capable of dispersing thousands of native tree seeds over degraded landscapes, accelerating reforestation in areas that are difficult for people to access.

Artificial intelligence is also transforming forest protection. Solar-powered bioacoustic monitoring devices installed high in forest canopies continuously listen for sounds associated with illegal logging, such as chainsaws and gunshots. When suspicious activity is detected, alerts are immediately transmitted to park rangers, enabling rapid intervention before extensive damage occurs.

Satellite monitoring has become another essential tool. Governments, researchers and environmental organizations now use near real-time imagery to detect forest loss, monitor peatland conditions, and strengthen law enforcement across vast landscapes.

Technology is proving that conservation can become smarter as well as stronger.

A Shared Future Beneath the Canopy

International Day of Forests reminds us that forests provide far more than timber. They regulate the climate, purify water, stabilize soils, sustain biodiversity, support indigenous cultures, and provide livelihoods for millions of people throughout Southeast Asia.

Their benefits extend well beyond national borders. The carbon stored in Borneo's forests influences the global climate. The rainfall generated by tropical forests supports agriculture across the region. The survival of countless species depends upon maintaining healthy ecosystems that have evolved over millions of years.

Across Southeast Asia, governments, scientists, indigenous communities, businesses and young people are increasingly working together to restore degraded forests and protect those that remain. Their efforts demonstrate that economic progress and forest conservation need not exist in opposition when guided by sustainable planning and shared responsibility.

On this International Day of Forests, the message resonates from the mountains of Papua to the peatlands of Sumatra and the forests of Borneo: protecting Southeast Asia's forests means protecting the climate, biodiversity, and communities that depend upon them.
