The year 2026 reveals two contrasting faces of biodiversity. On one hand, species are disappearing at an unprecedented rate. On the other, a small number of animals have managed to recover from the brink of extinction.
This dual reality is highlighted in an editorial published in the May 2026 issue of the scientific journal Biodiversity by Taylor & Francis, written by Managing Editor Rebecca Trueman.
Biodiversity refers to the full variety of life on Earth, encompassing species, genetic diversity, and ecosystems. When species disappear, the web of life that sustains food systems, freshwater resources, and climate stability is weakened. That is why this year's biodiversity trends deserve close attention.
A Crisis That Continues to Accelerate
The figures are alarming. The editorial cites the IUCN Red List, the world's official assessment of species' extinction risk, which classifies species into categories ranging from low risk to critically endangered.
According to the Red List, more than 48,600 species are now classified as threatened with extinction, representing roughly one-third of all species that have been assessed.
Even this figure reflects only the species that have been evaluated, while countless others have yet to be assessed. Within the Red List, threatened species are further categorized into three levels of risk: Vulnerable, Endangered, and Critically Endangered.
Even more concerning is the pace of biodiversity loss. The current extinction rate is estimated to be around 1,000 times higher than the natural background rate, the rate at which species would disappear without significant human influence on the planet.
In other words, species are vanishing far more rapidly than they would under natural conditions. Although extinction has always been a normal part of Earth's history, today's rate has accelerated far beyond its natural baseline.
The Few That Managed to Recover
The editorial also highlights encouraging developments. The most notable example is the green sea turtle. In October 2025, its conservation status was downlisted from Endangered to Least Concern.
A Least Concern classification means that, for the time being, the species is no longer considered to face an immediate risk of extinction. Previously, green sea turtle populations had declined because of egg harvesting, entanglement in fishing gear, and the loss of nesting beaches.
Such status improvements are rare and typically reflect decades of sustained effort. In this case, the reclassification was driven by an estimated 28 percent increase in nesting populations compared with the 1970s. Green sea turtles nest widely across tropical regions, including the coastlines of Southeast Asia.
The recovery was no accident. According to the editorial, the green sea turtle's success resulted from long-term international cooperation, including the protection of nesting habitats, improved fisheries management, and conservation initiatives involving local communities.
Two other species have also shown progress. The Guadalupe junco and the Shark Bay bandicoot were both downlisted to lower threat categories after undergoing carefully designed species recovery programs.
Even so, success stories like these remain the exception rather than the rule amid the broader trend of biodiversity decline.
What Separates Recovery from Extinction
For Trueman, this pattern offers an important lesson: the fate of a species depends largely on the scale and coordination of human efforts to protect it.
Species supported by long-term conservation programs, adequate funding, and coordinated international action are more likely to show measurable recovery. Stable funding is often decisive, as restoring a species can take decades.
By contrast, species that receive no comparable attention continue to move closer to extinction. The editorial argues that the biodiversity crisis of 2026 is not simply a story of decline, but also evidence that recovery is possible.
However, three conditions must come together: science-based policymaking, cross-border collaboration, and sustained investment. None of these can succeed in isolation.
The editorial's conclusion neither ignores the severity of the crisis nor embraces outright pessimism. Extinction continues at an alarming pace, and tens of thousands of species remain on the brink.
Yet the story of the green sea turtle demonstrates that this trajectory can be reversed—at least for species that benefit from sustained, well-coordinated conservation efforts. For Southeast Asia, home to exceptional marine biodiversity and tropical forests, that lesson is particularly relevant.
