Thailand officially became the first country in the world to launch Visa Destinations at the national level on 8 July 2026. Visa Destinations is currently available in ten locations worldwide. Nine of them, namely Paris, London, Dubai, Milan, Rome, Mexico City, New York, Miami, and San Francisco, operate only at the city level. Thailand is the only location where the program applies nationwide.
Visa Destinations is a new service from Visa that gives cardholders access to curated experiences at a destination, including dining, entertainment, culture, hotels, wellness, shopping, and transportation. It works through partnerships with local merchants and global partners.
Visa announced its global launch on 25 June 2026, after previously naming Thailand as its first Asia-Pacific market in May 2026.
Three Steps to National Status
Thailand did not receive this status all at once, but through three stages of announcements. The first stage took place in early May 2026, when Visa selected Thailand as the first Asia-Pacific market for Visa Destinations.
The second stage came on 25 June 2026, when Visa announced the global launch, grouping Thailand with nine other major cities in a single rollout package.
The third stage took place on 8 July 2026, when the full activation in Thailand was explained in greater detail. At this stage, Thailand was explicitly identified as the only national-level launch, while the other nine locations remained city-level programs.
Why Bangkok Became the Starting Point
Visa had a reason for starting with Thailand. Travelers in the Asia-Pacific region are increasingly choosing short-haul trips to nearby destinations such as Bangkok, Singapore, and Tokyo. T.R. Ramachandran, Head of Products and Solutions at Visa Asia Pacific, described Thailand as "a natural starting point" because of its strong connectivity and diverse cultural experiences.
This rationale is also supported by the numbers. Travel spending in Asia Pacific reaches around US$180 billion annually, accounting for more than 17 percent of all Visa card transactions in the region.
Thailand's tourism data further supports this decision. In 2025, Thailand welcomed more than 33 million visitors and generated US$50 billion from the tourism sector. According to the Thailand Travel Pulse Report 2026, spending by international visitors in Thailand grew by 14 percent compared with the previous year.
Interestingly, repeat visitors account for only 20 percent of all cardholders, yet they contribute 34 percent of all spending by international visitors. Around two-thirds of that spending comes from outside Asia Pacific, primarily from the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, France, and the United Arab Emirates.
Thailand's position in the region is also reflected in its ranking. It is among the five most-visited destinations for Asia-Pacific travelers, alongside Japan, Australia, South Korea, and Hong Kong.
Interestingly, the strongest growth in visitor spending in Thailand comes from everyday activities such as fast-food restaurants, grocery shopping, and dining experiences, rather than luxury shopping or major attractions.
From a Pilot Project to Nationwide Expansion
The program began with a small step. Song Wat in Bangkok, a historic district known for its old architecture and local cuisine, was selected as the pilot location. There, more than 50 merchants are already able to accept digital payments through a program called Songwat Experience.
Beyond Bangkok, the program also covers seven other major destinations: Phuket, Chiang Mai, Pattaya, Udon Thani, Koh Samui, Hua Hin, and Hat Yai.
From that small beginning, Visa has set a much larger goal. It aims to expand digital payment acceptance to 56,000 small and medium-sized businesses across Thailand. The target includes restaurants, retail stores, hotels, transportation services, tourist attractions, wellness providers, and other local experience providers.
To achieve this, Visa is implementing four main strategies: upgrading payment technology, using data from the VisaNet network to understand traveler behavior, partnering with business stakeholders, and expanding the number of merchants that accept Visa payments.
The program was developed in collaboration with the Tourism Authority of Thailand. Its goal is to attract high-spending and sustainable travelers, rather than simply increasing visitor numbers, while also accelerating the country's cashless payment infrastructure.
The Only Country on the List
At the global level, the ten Visa Destinations locations are supported by several major partners, including Santander Group, Global Blue, Star Alliance, which consists of 26 member airlines, and Trip.com Group.
Meanwhile, Anthony Watson, Visa Country Manager for Thailand, said that Thailand "is entering a critical period for tourism development." According to him, this momentum creates opportunities for tourist destinations, businesses, and local communities at the same time.
Singapore will become the next Asia-Pacific location to join the program later in the same year. However, the other nine locations will continue to operate at the city level rather than the national level. For now, Thailand remains the only country with a nationwide Visa Destinations launch.
