Rows of wooden bars stood along the banks of the Nam Song River. The venues sold various types of cheap alcoholic beverages to visitors.
Several tourists frequently combined drinking alcohol with river tubing activities. They floated down the river on inner tubes, stopping at various bars along the water's edge.
Bar operators also constructed jumping structures over the water flow. They once built structures, such as tall wooden towers, bamboo slides, and rope swings at the river's edge.
A rise in fatal accidents involving tourists in the shallow river prompted decisive action from local authorities. The Lao authority launched a massive crackdown operation in mid-2012.
The Lao authority moved in to close down bars along the area and demolished the dangerous jumping facilities. The riverbank area was subsequently reorganized to restore the river's recreational purpose.
Under the authority watch, businesses were required to obtain official permits to operate. Authorities also established designated buffer zones along the riverbank to prevent the erection of unauthorized permanent structures.
Wonderful Destinations in Vang Vieng
Despite the trail of past controversy, Vang Vieng holds significant potential across various natural tourism destinations. The area's main appeal focuses on exploring nature and outdoor activities.
The limestone geology of the region created an extensive network of caves and natural spring pools over time. This unique terrain makes Vang Vieng a prime location for geological exploration and eco-tourism.
The Blue Lagoon natural swimming area stands among the most visited destinations. Blue Lagoon 1, Blue Lagoon 2, and Blue Lagoon 3 offer clear water pools surrounded by karst cliffs.
Blue Lagoon 1 sits 7 kilometers from the town center and features a large tree branch used as a jumping platform into the water. Blue Lagoon 2 and 3 are located further west, offering larger open pool facilities.
