The Rajah Brooke’s birdwing (Trogonoptera brookiana) is one of the most iconic insects from Malaysia. The species belongs to the scientific family Papilionidae. The taxonomic group is widely known as the swallowtail butterfly family.
The natural habitat of the Rajah Brooke’s birdwing lies within the lowland rainforests of the Malay Peninsula, Borneo, and Sumatra. The insect frequently flies along the riverbanks of primary forests.
The Rajah Brooke’s birdwing was first recorded in the nineteenth century. A British naturalist, Alfred Russel Wallace, collected the first specimen in Sarawak in 1855. Wallace named the species Rajah Brooke in honor of the ruler of Sarawak at the time, James Brooke.
The Malaysian government officially designated the Rajah Brooke’s birdwing as the national butterfly in 1970.
The Illusion Behind the Green Glow
The forewings of male Rajah Brooke’s birdwings have a deep black base color.
The wing surface features an arrangement of seven emerald-green triangular markings along the edges of the forewings. The geometric green patterns create sharp and defined borders.
The back of the male's head bears a dense layer of bright crimson hairs. The red hairs form a thick collar directly at the base of the male's neck. The lower body segments appear dark with faint linear markings.
The emerald-green color on the male's wings does not originate from chemical pigments. The green coloration forms through the physical arrangement of microstructures within the wing scales.
The biological structure of male Rajah Brooke’s birdwing wings possesses an organized three-dimensional lattice pattern across the forewing surface.
The microstructures on the scale surface regulate the reflection of sunlight. The physical layer of the scales absorbs most light spectrum wavelengths and reflects only green light waves into the surrounding environment. The diffraction of light waves produces the visual appearance of an iridescent green glow.
Contrasting Colors, Separate Habitats
Not all Rajah Brooke’s birdwings possess bright emerald-green markings. Female butterflies display a distinct visual pattern across the entire body.
The wing surface of the female is dominated by a dark brownish-black color with golden-white to pale gray dusting along the wing veins, lacking the row of sharp green triangular patterns.
The neck of the female lacks the crimson collar found on the male body. The female body displays a uniform dark brown color from the head to the tip of the abdomen.
Physical differences extend to the body size of each sex. Female butterflies have a larger wingspan ranging between 17 and 19 centimeters, whereas male butterflies have a smaller wingspan ranging between 14 and 16 centimeters.
Apart from the distinct physical morphology, male and female butterflies exhibit different behavioral habits in the forest.
Males frequently fly low and land on riverbanks to ingest dissolved minerals and salts from wet sand.
The intake of sodium and natural minerals maintains flight stamina and supports male reproductive fertility.
Females spend almost their entire life cycle in the upper canopy of the rainforest. The female requires nectar from high-canopy flowers as a primary energy source, while also searching for leaves of the wild climbing vine Aristolochia foveolata to lay eggs.
The Bitter Toxic Shield
Eggs laid on Aristolochia foveolata leaves hatch into herbivorous larvae.
Rajah Brooke’s birdwing larvae feed exclusively on wild climbing vines of the genus Aristolochia as the primary nutrient source during the growth stage.
The leaves of the wild vine contain a natural toxic compound known as aristolochic acid.
The larvae consume the foliage and accumulate the toxic compounds within body tissues, but the poison does not damage the internal organs of the larvae.
The accumulated aristolochic acid remains in the body through the adult butterfly stage. The chemical compound creates a very bitter taste that poses toxicity to other animals.
