Indonesia’s largest-ever peacekeeping mission to Gaza will be led by a three-star lieutenant general, TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto confirmed, noting that preparations have now entered the candidate selection phase for the historic deployment.
TNI Information Office chief Major General Freddy Ardianzah explained that the mission will consist of three composite brigades, requiring a commander with extensive joint-operations experience to coordinate the Army, Navy, and Air Force for a non-combat humanitarian mandate.
The chosen commander must demonstrate strong military diplomacy skills, strategic communication abilities, overseas experience—particularly in international peacekeeping—and a proven track record in global missions or foreign training, with several three-star officers already shortlisted pending final approval from the Indonesian government and the United Nations.
This large-scale deployment follows directives from President Prabowo Subianto and confirmation from Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin that Indonesia has prepared 20,000 personnel, organized into health, construction engineer, support, and mechanical support battalions focused on medical aid and infrastructure rebuilding for Gaza’s civilian population.
President Prabowo first announced Indonesia’s willingness to send 20,000 peacekeepers during his address at the 80th UN General Assembly in New York, with TNI Headquarters now conducting rigorous physical and psychological screening across all military branches and planning reconnaissance teams to assess on-ground conditions ahead of the full UN-mandated deployment aimed at supporting peace processes and political negotiations.
