Evolutionary biologist Dr. Anjali Goswami from London's Natural History Museum argues that cats represent near-evolutionary perfection because they have mastered one ecological niche so completely that they require minimal variation across species, from domestic cats to tigers.

Unlike other carnivorous mammals that retain grinding molars for varied diets, cats have evolved specialized "slicing teeth" and eliminated everything behind them, making them obligate carnivores who excel at precision hunting rather than being adaptable generalists.

Goswami explains that cats maintain identical skull structures and body proportions across all species sizes, noting that even experts cannot distinguish between lion and tiger skulls, demonstrating how evolution has found their design so effective that minimal changes have been necessary over millions of years.

The research challenges traditional evolutionary biology assumptions that diversity equals success, as cats prove that mastery of a single function can be more advantageous than versatility, with multiple failed attempts by other mammal groups like marsupials and creodonts to replicate the feline blueprint.

This evolutionary consistency extends to behavior, as nearly all cats remain solitary, territorial predators who evolve slowly compared to social mammals, suggesting their biological design has reached such optimization that nature has essentially "stepped back" from further modifications.
