Indonesia has agreed to export 3.4-3.5 gigawatts (GW) of clean electricity to Singapore by 2035, following the signing of memorandums of understanding on June 13 between Indonesia's Minister for Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia and Singapore's Minister-in-charge of Energy and Science and Technology Tan See Leng.
This cooperation will strengthen Southeast Asia's transition to green energy, with Minister Bahlil revealing that this agreement resulted from meetings between President Prabowo and Singapore's Prime Minister.
The landmark deal could generate US$30-50 billion in investment for solar panel generators and US$2.7 billion for manufacturing solar panels and batteries, creating significant economic opportunities for both nations.
The agreement has the potential to create 418,000 new jobs across manufacturing, construction, operations, and maintenance sectors, demonstrating the substantial employment benefits of this green energy partnership.
Singapore has increased its low-carbon electricity import target to around 6 GW by 2035, up from the initial 4 GW announced in 2021, as the city-state accelerates its renewable energy transition and reduces dependence on fossil fuels.
