Indonesia and China will launch a cross-border QR payment system on April 30, 2026. Users from both countries can pay abroad using their local QR apps. Indonesian users can scan QR codes in China with QRIS, while Chinese users can pay in Indonesia using apps like Alipay or WeChat Pay, depending on integration.
Bank Indonesia said the system is ready after final testing. During the trial phase, it processed 1.64 million transactions with a total value of about USD 34 million, with dozens of banks and payment providers involved.
For users, this means no need to exchange cash for small payments, no need to install new apps, and faster checkout in shops, restaurants, and transport. The system mainly benefits tourists, small merchants, and cross-border retail.
Indonesia’s domestic payment system, BI-FAST, is also growing. In the first quarter of 2026, it handled 1.4 billion transactions, up 31 percent year-on-year, with daily transactions reaching 15.6 million. Total value reached about USD 215 billion.
Bank Indonesia is now developing a new version of BI-FAST to increase capacity, improve fraud prevention, strengthen cybersecurity, and support future cross-border integration. This reflects a wider trend in Asia to connect payment systems and reduce reliance on cash and international cards.
