Cross-border QRIS usage is surging across Indonesia's banking sector. Bank Indonesia (BI) recorded 60.77 million QRIS users as of February 2026, alongside a significant rise in international transactions from both directions, covering Indonesian citizens abroad and foreign tourists transacting within Indonesia.
BI Deputy Governor Filianingsih Hendarta revealed that inbound transactions in 2025 reached 5.89 million, far exceeding outbound transactions at 1.68 million. Among partner countries, Malaysia has been the most active since the partnership launched in May 2023, recording 10.66 million transactions worth Rp 2.75 trillion.
Thailand followed with 1.64 million transactions, while Singapore and Japan continue to grow. On April 1, 2026, BI officially launched QRIS connectivity with Bank of Korea, expanding the network to South Korea.
PT Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI) recorded cross-border QRIS transaction growth of 240% year-on-year (yoy) through end-2025. Head of Division Retail Digital Product and Partnership BNI, Mesah Roni Ginting, cited Malaysia as the largest contributor, driven by high Indonesian traveler mobility and a well-developed QR payment ecosystem in the country. BNI is targeting overall QRIS transaction growth of 160% yoy in 2026.
PT Bank Tabungan Negara (BTN) also posted strong results. Through March 2026, BTN's cross-border QRIS transactions grew 31% month-on-month, while transaction volume climbed 38%. Senior Executive Vice President Digital Business BTN, Thomas Wahyudi, identified Malaysia as the top-performing market, with transaction volume jumping approximately sevenfold between April 2025 and March 2026.
BTN is targeting 30% yoy growth in cross-border QRIS transactions for 2026. To support this, BTN launched the "Connect the World" promotion offering cashback of up to 15% for customers transacting abroad via QRIS Balé by BTN, while also expanding partnerships to more countries, including China.
