The World Bank has classified the Philippines as an upper-middle income country. It ends the country's lower middle-income status held since 1987.
Its GNI per capita hit a record $4,850, up from $4,470. This passed the $4,636 threshold set by the World Bank.
The World Bank cited strong growth, averaging 5.8% yearly for five years. DEPDev Secretary Arsenio Balisacan called it proof of economic resilience. Vietnam, Jordan, and Sri Lanka also moved up this year.
