The Philippines achieved a historic energy milestone on January 19, 2026, when President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced the discovery of the Malampaya East-1 (MAE-1) reservoir containing approximately 98 billion cubic feet of natural gas—the country's first major gas find in over a decade—located just five kilometers east of the existing Malampaya field offshore Palawan.
According to President Marcos, the discovery represents nearly 14 billion kilowatt-hours of annual electricity generation capacity, sufficient to power over 5.7 million households, 9,500 buildings, or approximately 200,000 schools for one year, with initial testing showing the well flowing at 60 million standard cubic feet per day—indicating high productivity comparable to the original Malampaya wells and potential for even greater output.
The breakthrough marks the first milestone under the Malampaya Phase 4 drilling campaign led by the Service Contract 38 Consortium comprising Prime Energy as operator, partnering with UC38 LLC, Philippine National Oil Company Exploration Corporation, and Prime Oil and Gas Inc., with subsequent phases targeting the Camago-3 completion and Bagong Pag-asa exploration well to secure additional gas resources.
Beyond natural gas, the discovery also yielded condensate—a high-value liquid fuel that can further support government efforts to stabilize the national power supply—providing crucial momentum as the mature Malampaya field, which currently supplies approximately 40% of Luzon's electricity requirements and about one-fifth of the Philippines' total energy needs, faces declining production after more than two decades of operation.
This indigenous energy find strengthens the Philippines' long-term energy security and reduces dependence on imported liquefied natural gas that comprised nearly half of the country's gas requirements in 2024, while Marcos credited the achievement to Filipino-led drilling operations completed without accidents or environmental incidents, demonstrating that responsible environmental stewardship combined with robust government-private sector cooperation can deliver reliable energy supply for every Filipino.
