In a bid to avoid heavy U.S. tariffs, Viet Nam has offered to cut import duties on American goods to 0%, while Cambodia proposed lowering its tariffs to 5% and requested a delay on new US tariff hikes.
Communist Party of Viet Nam (CPV)’s General Secretary Tô Lâm discussed the proposal directly with Donald Trump, who called the conversation "very productive" and expressed interest in a future meeting to finalize a trade agreement.
The Vietnamese government confirmed plans to buy more U.S. goods, like airplanes and agricultural products, and hopes for a reciprocal reduction in tariffs, especially as the country braces for a 46% U.S. import duty set to take effect on April 9, 2025.
