Zootopia 2 has officially overtaken Frozen 2 to become Walt Disney Animation Studios’ highest-grossing film of all time, earning around $1.46 billion globally and surpassing the previous $1.45 billion record set in 2019.
Released on November 26, the sequel raced past the $1 billion mark in just 17 days, making it the fastest PG-rated and animated Motion Picture Association release to hit that milestone, with $333 million from the domestic box office and $1.13 billion from international markets.
China played a decisive role in the film’s record-breaking run, contributing more than $560 million in ticket sales, dominating about 95 percent of the national box office during its opening weekend, and becoming the country’s highest-grossing foreign animated film within five days.
Walt Disney Animation Studios Chief Creative Officer Jared Bush said the achievement highlights a global appetite for shared theatrical experiences, noting the film’s strong reception with a 96 percent Certified Hot audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and an A CinemaScore.
The sequel reunites Ginnifer Goodwin as Judy Hopps and Jason Bateman as Nick Wilde, and, following the success of Moana 2 in 2024, marks Disney Animation’s first back-to-back billion-dollar releases, bringing the studio’s total to five films crossing the billion-dollar threshold since 2013.
