Indonesian Films that Made International Debuts

Indonesia has advanced more and more in the film industry. Not only the storyline but improvement on the angle of the shooting side can also be seen as well. Films produced domestically cannot be underestimated, especially after several works have successfully entered international festivals and worthy of appreciation.

At the 2018 Berlinale International Film Festival, this film by Kamila Andini won the Best Film Award. Sekala Niskala was awarded in Asian Pacific Jogja Film Festival (JAFF), Best Film in Tokio Film Ex, and the Asian Pacific Screen Award for the best teen movie in the world in 2017.

Laskar Pelangi has received many awards from international festivals as one of the most popular films of all time; one of these is the International Children & Young Adult Film Festival at Hamedan, Iran as the Golden International Film. Laskar Pelangi is a film directed by Riri Riza.

Airing in 2019, this one film directed by Joko Anwar was successfully screened at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival. Gundala is a feature film based on a comic made by Harya Suraminata and has successfully competed with Hollywood films such as Knives Out, Joker, and Radioactive in the People's Choice Award.

Garin Nugroho's 2018 film was one of Indonesia's controversial films due to the LGBT problem it raised. Despite the controversy, however, Kucumbu Tubuh Indahku was able to bring home the trophy of the Asian-Pacific Screen Award 2018, the International Cinephille Society Awards 2019, and the International Film Festival of Guadalajara for 2019.

Aired in 2017, the film, played by Marsha Timothy, won 10 out of 15 categories at the 2018 Indonesian Film Festival. Despite failing to represent Indonesia at the Academy Award in the Foreign Language Film category, Marlina Si Pembunuh dalam Empat Babak was included in the FIFFS Moroccan International Award 11th edition of the Catalonian International Film Festival 2017, Tokyo FilmEx 2017, and best film in Asian Next West Wave the Qcinema Film Festival Philippines.
