The government of Brazil has officially announced that Indonesia has been admitted as a full member of BRICS, a prominent economic bloc comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The announcement was made on Monday (January 6), marking a significant milestone in Indonesia's journey toward deeper global economic cooperation.

Consensus Among BRICS Leaders

As the current chair of BRICS for the 2025 term, Brazil emphasized that this decision was reached through a consensus among all BRICS member states during the 2023 BRICS Summit held in Johannesburg, South Africa. Indonesia's inclusion is part of the bloc's ongoing efforts to expand its membership and strengthen the role of emerging economies in the global economic order.

“In its capacity as the current BRICS presidency, which began on January 1 and will continue until December 31, 2025, the government of Brazil proudly announces the official admission of the Republic of Indonesia as a full member of BRICS,” the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in its official press release.

A Strategic Move for Indonesia

BRICS, established in 2006, aims to enhance cooperation among its member states in key areas such as trade, investment, and sustainable development. Indonesia’s inclusion opens new opportunities to build stronger partnerships with member nations and actively contribute to the bloc's initiatives.

Indonesia’s membership highlights the country’s growing significance internationally, particularly in fostering strategic alliances with other emerging economies. With its vast potential and dynamic economy, Indonesia is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening intra-BRICS collaboration and addressing shared global challenges.

Global Impact and Opportunities

Furthermore, this development underscores Indonesia’s commitment to multilateralism and its aspirations to contribute more actively to global economic governance. As a member of BRICS, Indonesia will have the opportunity to influence key global economic policies, expand its trade networks, and attract more foreign investments.

By joining BRICS, Indonesia also aligns itself with a group that collectively represents nearly 40% of the world’s population and accounts for over 25% of global GDP. This membership will enhance Indonesia’s ability to engage in high-level dialogues and work toward shared economic and developmental goals.

Strengthening the BRICS Vision

As BRICS continues to evolve and expand, Indonesia’s entry is seen as a strategic move that benefits the nation and reinforces the bloc’s vision of creating a more inclusive and equitable global economic order.
