Thailand has summoned Iran’s ambassador in Bangkok after a Thai-flagged cargo ship was struck while passing through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route.

The incident, which left several crew members missing and sparked international concern, has heightened tensions between Bangkok and Tehran as authorities seek explanations and demand accountability.

The Attack on Mayuree Naree

The incident involved a Thai bulk carrier named Mayuree Naree, which was sailing through the Strait of Hormuz after departing from the United Arab Emirates.

The vessel, carrying 23 crew members, was struck by projectiles that caused a fire and severe damage to parts of the ship, including the engine room.

Following the strike, most of the crew were forced to abandon the vessel. Twenty sailors were rescued by the Omani navy and taken to safety, while three crew members were initially reported missing as rescue efforts continued.

Images released by authorities showed thick black smoke rising from the damaged ship as emergency responders coordinated rescue operations in nearby waters.

The attack occurred in one of the world’s most strategically important waterways, where a large portion of global oil and commercial shipping traffic passes each day. Any disruption in the strait quickly raises concerns about global trade and energy supplies.

Islamic Republic Claims Responsibility

Iran later acknowledged that its forces had fired on the Thai-flagged vessel. According to statements attributed to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the ship was targeted after allegedly ignoring warnings issued by Iranian naval forces while passing through the strait.

Iranian officials said the ship attempted to transit the waterway without complying with instructions from Iranian authorities. The IRGC claimed the vessel continued its journey despite warnings and was therefore fired upon.

The strike was reportedly part of broader measures taken by Iran to assert control over shipping movements in the Strait of Hormuz amid escalating regional tensions.

Iranian military officials have warned that vessels passing through the waterway must seek authorization in advance or risk being intercepted.

Thailand’s Response

In response to the attack, Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Iran’s ambassador in Bangkok to seek clarification and express strong concern over the incident.

Thai officials described the strike on a civilian commercial vessel as deeply troubling and said the government expects a full explanation from Tehran.

Thai authorities emphasized the need to protect freedom of navigation and the safety of civilian maritime traffic. They also urged all parties involved in the broader regional conflict to exercise restraint and adhere to international law.

The government noted that the attack endangered Thai nationals working aboard the vessel and highlighted the risks faced by commercial shipping in conflict zones.

In addition to summoning the Iranian ambassador, Thailand has been coordinating with international partners and regional authorities to monitor the situation and assist the affected crew members.

Growing Concerns

The attack on the Thai vessel is part of a broader escalation in tensions in the Persian Gulf and surrounding waters. Several commercial ships have reportedly been targeted in recent days as the regional conflict intensifies.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global energy supplies, with roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil passing through the narrow waterway. Any disruption to shipping there can have immediate consequences for global energy markets and international trade.

As tensions rise, shipping companies and governments are increasingly concerned about the safety of vessels operating in the region.

Insurance costs for ships transiting the area have already surged, and some operators are reconsidering routes through the strait. Thailand has also begun reassessing the safety of its merchant fleet operating in the Middle East.

Uncertain Next Steps

For Thailand, the immediate priority remains the safety of its sailors and the search for the missing crew members from the damaged vessel. Authorities continue to coordinate with regional partners to ensure that rescue efforts and investigations proceed quickly.

At the diplomatic level, the summoning of Iran’s ambassador signals Bangkok’s determination to seek accountability and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

However, with tensions in the Middle East continuing to rise, the attack on the Thai cargo ship highlights how regional conflicts can quickly spill over into international shipping lanes, affecting countries far beyond the immediate area of conflict.
