Standing proudly on the breathaking Sibea-bea Hill in Samosir Regency, North Sumatra, the statue of “Jesus Christ the Savior” or locally known as “Jesus Blessed Sibea-bea” (Indonesian: Yesus Memberkati Sibea-bea) has been recognized as the tallest statue of Jesus on the planet.

With the height of 61 meters (200 feet), this beautiful landmark surpasses the iconic Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, by over 20 meters. It also stands taller than the former record-holder, the Christ the King statue in Poland.

Perched at 1,021 meters above sea level, the monument overlooks the stunning panoramic views of Lake Toba, the largest volcanic lake in the world. This makes it significantly larger than any other Jesus statues around the world.

A Remarkable Landmark in a Diverse Nation

What makes this achievement even more compelling is that it stands in Indonesia, a Muslim majority country. More than 80 percent of its citizens are following Islamic faith.

However, the presence of this monumental Christian icon serves as a powerful symbol of the nation's commitment to religious diversity and harmony. Located in the heart of Samosir, the statue has officially become a new global landmark after its opening on February 18, 2023.

According to official data from the Samosir Regency Government, the 61-meter height of the Sibea-bea statue sets a new international standard. It significantly dwarfs Brazil’s famous Christ the Redeemer, which stands at 30 meters tall. Furthermore, it exceeds other major statues such as the Christ the Protector in Brazil (43.5 meters) and the Heart of Jesus statue in Romania (22.5 meters).

A World-Class Religious Tourism Zone

The ambitious project began with a groundbreaking ceremony on Sunday, June 17, 2018. It was championed by the Regent of Samosir at the time, Rapidin Simbolon, who envisioned the statue as a defining icon for the region. Despite the massive scale of the project, construction reached the 50 percent mark by March 2021, eventually leading to the completion of the statue and the surrounding facilities.

The statue is the centerpiece of a specially designed religious tourism zone. Beyond its spiritual significance for Christian pilgrims, the site is built to accommodate all visitors with modern infrastructure, including a prayer house, a restaurant, and a high-quality access road.

The winding road leading up to the statue has become a favorite spot for visitors to enjoy sports like walking or jogging, all while being treated to the majestic backdrop of Lake Toba. Even before the statue was built, Sibea-bea Hill was already famous for its natural beauty, but it has now been transformed into a world-class destination that combines spiritual reflection with Indonesia's breathtaking natural landscapes.
