The Remarkable Bees of Southeast Asia

Among them is the Giant Asian Honeybee (Apis dorsata), famous for constructing massive exposed combs that hang from towering rainforest trees or limestone cliffs. These highly mobile wild bees travel great distances, pollinating countless flowering trees across tropical forests and helping maintain the ecological balance of some of Earth's oldest ecosystems.

Equally remarkable are the region's stingless bees, commonly known as Kelulut in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. Although much smaller than honeybees and unable to sting, these native pollinators produce distinctive sour-sweet honey renowned for its rich antioxidant content and medicinal properties. Their remarkable ability to thrive in tropical environments has made stingless beekeeping an increasingly important source of sustainable income for rural communities.

Pollinating Southeast Asia's Food Basket

Beyond honey production, bees perform one of the most valuable ecological services on Earth: pollination.

The Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that approximately 75 percent of the world's leading food crops depend, at least in part, on animal pollination. Across Southeast Asia, bees help sustain the production of durian, rambutan, mangoes, coffee, coconuts, cocoa, vegetables, spices, and numerous native fruits.

Durian, often celebrated as the "King of Fruits," offers a remarkable example of ecological cooperation. While nectar-feeding bats pollinate many flowers during the night, native bees—including stingless bees—continue pollination throughout the day, improving fruit development and supporting higher-quality harvests.

Healthy bee populations therefore translate directly into stronger agricultural productivity, improved food security, and greater income for millions of farmers across ASEAN.

According to Indonesian pollinator expert Dr. Tri Atmowidi of IPB University, conserving native pollinators is essential for maintaining both biodiversity and sustainable agricultural production. His research has consistently highlighted the significant contribution of indigenous bee species to crop yields throughout Indonesia.

Protecting Pollinators in a Changing Landscape

Despite their immense value, Southeast Asia's bees face growing challenges.

Deforestation continues to remove ancient nesting trees used by giant honeybees, particularly the towering Pohon Sialang that colonies have occupied for generations. When these old-growth trees disappear, entire pollination networks may collapse.

Intensive pesticide use across agricultural landscapes also threatens bee populations by impairing navigation, reducing reproduction, and killing foraging insects. Climate change further compounds these pressures through shifting flowering seasons, prolonged droughts, and increasingly unpredictable rainfall.

Seasonal transboundary haze resulting from peatland and forest fires presents another regional threat. Thick smoke reduces visibility, interferes with bee navigation, and suppresses flowering across vast forest landscapes, disrupting the delicate relationship between pollinators and plants.

Protecting bees therefore requires conserving forests, reducing harmful pesticide use, restoring native vegetation, and promoting farming practices that support biodiversity alongside food production.

World Bee Day reminds us that some of nature's most important workers are also among its smallest.

Across Southeast Asia, scientists, farmers, indigenous communities, beekeepers, conservation organizations, and governments are increasingly recognizing that safeguarding native bees is essential for environmental resilience and sustainable development. Community forests are preserving ancient honey trees, universities are expanding pollinator research, and rural entrepreneurs are transforming stingless beekeeping into thriving green businesses.

The future of Southeast Asia's forests and farms depends not only on protecting iconic wildlife, but also on ensuring that bees continue to pollinate the flowers, crops, and forests upon which countless species—including humanity—depend.
