Warm farewells and new introductions brought dozens of journalists, media workers and partners to Russian Ambassador Sergei Tolchenov’s residence in Jakarta on October 4, 2026. The reception honoured outgoing Press Attaché Alexander Tumaykin and welcomed his successor, Varvara Ryabinchenko, highlighting the personal relationships behind diplomatic communication.

Celebrating Relationships Built on Trust

Opening the evening, Tolchenov thanked guests for attending and praised Tumaykin’s work in building and maintaining relationships with Indonesian journalists. He presented the transition as an opportunity for Ryabinchenko to continue that engagement, carrying established connections into a new chapter.

Known affectionately among journalists as Alex, Tumaykin delivered his farewell remarks in Indonesian. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with Indonesia’s media community, encouraged colleagues to stay in touch and shared his hope that their paths would cross again.

His choice of language gave the farewell a personal warmth, reflecting the familiarity that had developed through their professional exchanges.

Recognising the People Behind the Partnership

A representative of the journalists thanked Tumaykin for being approachable, friendly and helpful, before presenting a souvenir and token of appreciation. The gesture recognised the everyday work of maintaining communication between an embassy and the reporters covering its activities.

For Ryabinchenko, the gathering offered an introduction to those professional relationships. Over dinner, guests continued their conversations, posed for photographs and exchanged good wishes with the departing attaché.

Connecting Personal Ties with Wider Cooperation

The handover came amid broader engagement between Russian and Indonesian media institutions. On September 22, 2026, ANTARA reported cooperation discussions with three Russian organisations: Sputnik, RT and TASS. These included a news-exchange agreement with Sputnik, audiovisual cooperation discussions with RT and potential journalist capacity-building with TASS.

Government-level discussions have also addressed the sector. In April 2025, Indonesian Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Nezar Patria called for an agreement to affirm cooperation in digital development and media. “We hope this meeting will produce an initiative to establish an MoU between Indonesia and Russia,” he said, translated from Indonesian.

The relationship rests on a longer diplomatic history. Marking its 75th anniversary in February 2025, Tolchenov said, also translated from Indonesian: “For more than seven decades, bilateral cooperation has developed successfully and dynamically across various fields.”

Those earlier statements provided a wider backdrop to the reception. Sustained media engagement depends on accessible contacts and opportunities to ask questions, alongside journalists’ responsibility to verify information independently.

As the evening closed, photographs and farewell wishes captured a simple transition: appreciation for Alex’s contribution, and a welcome for Varvara as she began building her own connections with Indonesia’s media community.
