Global employment at scale is increasingly shaped by a small group of corporate giants, led decisively by Walmart. With a workforce of around 2.1 million employees, Walmart stands as the world’s largest listed employer. Its dominance reflects the sheer size of global retail operations, spanning thousands of stores and supply chains that support everyday consumer needs across multiple continents.
In second place is Amazon, employing approximately 1.55 million people worldwide. Amazon’s massive workforce highlights the labor intensity of e-commerce, logistics, cloud services, and last-mile delivery. As online shopping and digital infrastructure expand globally, Amazon’s role as a top employer underscores how technology-driven companies can rival—and even challenge—traditional retail giants in job creation.
Rounding out the top three is BYD, with about 968,900 employees, making it the largest non-Western employer on the list. As a leader in electric vehicles, batteries, and clean energy, BYD’s workforce reflects China’s industrial scale and its push into future-facing technologies.
