Singapore has officially broken ground on Terminal 5 at Changi Airport, a major milestone in the country's long-term aviation plan, with operations from Singapore Airlines and Scoot set to relocate there by the mid-2030s to improve efficiency and meet rising travel demand.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore revealed that the terminal, larger than Terminals 1 to 3 combined, will initially accommodate up to 50 million passengers annually and feature a 2km underground transit system to enhance connectivity and streamline passenger flow.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong highlighted Terminal 5’s significance in boosting economic recovery, safeguarding Singapore’s global hub status, and generating thousands of new aviation-related jobs, supported by employment projections from the Ministry of Manpower.

To support seamless access, the Land Transport Authority announced integrated road and rail systems, alongside eco-friendly designs such as solar energy, sustainable fuel infrastructure, and advanced air traffic technologies developed in collaboration with global aviation partners.

Led by the Changi Airport Group and Ministry of Transport, Terminal 5 is central to the Changi East development and fits into the Urban Redevelopment Authority’s broader goal of turning eastern Singapore into a thriving aerotropolis driven by connectivity and innovation.
