Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare announced that the country reached a historic milestone with 99,763 centenarians as of September 1, 2025, marking an increase of 4,644 from the previous year.

This achievement represents the 55th consecutive year that Japan has set a new world record for the highest number of people aged 100 or older, demonstrating the nation's exceptional longevity trends.

Women dramatically dominate Japan's centenarian population, accounting for approximately 88% of all people aged 100 or older, with 87,784 women compared to just 11,979 men.

The data translates to an average of 80.58 centenarians per 100,000 people, according to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare's resident registry system.

The announcement was strategically released ahead of Japan's national Respect for the Aged Day holiday on September 15, highlighting the country's cultural reverence for elderly citizens and their remarkable achievements in longevity.
